The Cisalpine Gaulish Alphabets

The so-called Lepontic alphabet (referred to as the ‘Lugano alphabet’ by Pauli) is an alphabet of Etruscan origin used to write the Celtic language of Italy from around 600 BCE until the Romanization period (1st century BCE), when the Latin alphabet was also occasionally employed.

The theoretical Lepontic alphabet consists of 18 or 19 characters. In its early phase, sometimes the forms and values of the characters appear inconsistent, but between the late 5th and early 4th centuries BCE, coinciding with the arrival of Celtic groups from beyond the Alps, the alphabet began to stabilize. The Lepontic alphabet includes the grapheme o, indicating that it was still known by Etruscan scribes in the 6th century BCE, despite not being used in Etruscan inscriptions. It is also distinguished by the peculiar butterfly-shaped form of the grapheme ś.
